A standardised tool used to evaluate how individuals perceive, process and respond to sensory information in daily life.

At Neuro Nest Clinic, we provide comprehensive private Sensory Profile assessments designed to help individuals and families better understand how sensory processing differences influence everyday life, behaviour, emotional regulation and participation in daily activities.

Our assessment explores how an individual responds to sensory information across different environments, including home, school, work and the community. We identify sensory strengths and areas of difficulty and consider how these may impact learning, relationships, independence, emotional wellbeing and overall quality of life.

Led by an experienced NHS Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist, our assessments provide a clear understanding of an individual's sensory profile, alongside practical, personalised recommendations and strategies to support regulation, participation and everyday functioning.

What is Sensory Processing?

Sensory processing is the way the brain receives, organises and responds to information from the senses, helping us understand and interact with the world around us. This includes information from sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, balance, movement and body awareness.

When sensory processing differences are present, the brain may respond to sensory information differently. Some individuals may seek additional sensory input, while others may become overwhelmed or avoid certain sensations altogether. These differences can affect attention, behaviour, emotional regulation, learning, participation and everyday life at home, school, work and within the community.

Understanding an individual's sensory profile helps identify their unique sensory strengths and challenges, allowing practical strategies and environmental adaptations to better support regulation, participation and wellbeing.

Signs of Sensory Processing Challenges

Individuals may experience:

  • Over- or under-reacting to sounds, lights, touch, smells or tastes
  • Discomfort with certain clothing, fabrics or food textures
  • Becoming overwhelmed in busy or noisy environments
  • Seeking movement through spinning, jumping, crashing or fidgeting
  • Difficulty with balance, coordination or body awareness
  • Needing repetitive movement or sensory input to feel calm
  • Becoming overwhelmed, leading to anxiety, meltdowns or shutdowns
  • Difficulty concentrating or participating in everyday activities due to sensory input

What is involved

A Sensory Profile is a standardised assessment that helps us understand how an individual responds to sensory information throughout everyday life. It identifies patterns of sensory processing and explains how these influence behaviour, emotional regulation, participation, learning and daily activities.

The assessment is based on Dunn's Model of Sensory Processing, which describes four sensory patterns (quadrants). Everyone demonstrates all four patterns to some degree, but understanding an individual's unique profile helps identify the strategies and environments that best support them.

The four sensory patterns are:

  • Sensory Seeking
  • Sensory Avoiding
  • Sensory Sensitivity
  • Low Registration
